Baguio City celebrates it’s 99th Birthday!

The local government in coordination with the barangays, national line agencies, the veterans group, the academe, non-government agencies, and the Baguio Centennial Commission (BCC) has come up with simple yet meaningful ceremonies with highlights on the awards for the outstanding citizens of Baguio for 2008.
The program is in three parts, the first at 7 AM, the ecumenical services at the Baguio Cathedral and other places of worship for other denominations; the second at 9 AM, the award ceremonies at the University of Baguio Gym; and the last part, starting at 10 AM, the historical parade and other activities until the evening in different venues.
Technology plays a part in the awarding ceremonies; when after the invocation, national anthem and Baguio March by groups from the University of Baguio (UB) music, culture and arts groups and the city hall choir; an audio-visual presentation shall be rendered by UB mass communication students.
Messages shall be given by Baguio’s top solon, Congressman Mauricio Domogan, and Mayor Reinaldo Bautista, Jr., afterwhich they will be joined by Vice-Mayor Daniel Farinas and Society of Outstanding Citizens of Baguio (SOCOB) to confer awards to the chosen six outstanding citizens of 2008.
An interesting innovation to the parade shall be the showcase presentation by the Baguio Centennial Committee focused on the different ethno-linguistic groups and the re-enactment of historical happenings in the city for the past 100 years.
At 2 PM, an Ecumenical Choir and Praise Band Festival dubbed as “One Voice, One Melody,” shall be conducted at the Baguio Convention Center. At 4 PM, a concert featuring local bands shall play for interested individuals, while a dinner for a cause shall be held at 6 PM at the Baguio Convention Center. Fireworks display shall be done at 7 PM, at SM Baguio and Porta Vaga Parking lot.
The month-long activities include; Sept 1, Funshoot at West Point Shooting Range, Badiwan, Tuba, Benguet; Awarding of Best Barangay History Contest; Sept. 2, Turn-over of Howard Fry Collection; Sept. 3, Yamashita Surrender Anniversary; Sept. 6, Tree Planting and Baguio Day Invitational Boxing Tournament at Igorot Garden; Sept. 7, Mr. Nick Domalsin Cup Bodybuilding Tilt at the Baguio Convention Center; Sept. 8-9, Muay Luzon Invitational Championship at the Igorot Garden; Sept. 10-13, 17-20, “King and I” School Production at the Saint Louis University Center for Culture and Arts (SLU-CCA), and Sept. 13, an Art Workshop with time and venue still to be arranged.
Sept. 13-14, Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League (BBEAL) Table Tennis and Badminton Tournament; Sept. 20-21, 2008, Wrestling Regional Championship at Malcolm Square; Sept. 21, Veteran’s Walk for Peace; Sept. 27, Car Offroad race, Sept. 28, Baguio Day Gymkhana at Wright Park Bridle Path; Fourth Week of September, “Ubdan Daing” as organized by the Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
Other activities with dates and venue still to be arranged; Launching of the Centennial Calendar, Centennial Gift Sharing, and Tree Planting.
